Abstract The extreme Programming methodology (XP) relies on co-located collaboration of programming teams. This paper discusses problems and possible solutions when distributed teams decide to do XP. Communication and awareness support are the keys to the successful distribution of programming teams. The XP methodology is analysed with respect to these essential issues. We present TUKAN, which is a synchronous distributed team programming environment, which applies groupware research results to the XP domain and solves the problems which arise when XP is carried out by distributed teams.

Process Support for Distributed Extreme Programming Teams
Extreme programming (XP) is arguably improving the productivity of small, co-located software development teams. In this paper, we described an approach that overcomes the XP constraint of colocation by introducing a process-support environment (called MILOS) that helps software development teams to maintain XP practices in a distributed setting. MILOS supports project coordination, information...
متن کاملVirtual Extreme Programming Workbench: a support tool for practitioners of extreme programming in a distributed environment
The Extreme Programming software development methodology relies heavily on the colocation of the team members. Outsourcing and teleworking is becoming more common nowadays, meaning that XP practitioners need to adapt their daily XP practices for a distributed setting. In most cases the distributed teams use (existing) tools that is a direct translation of a practice without thinking about inter...

متن کاملCollaboration and co-ordination in mature eXtreme programming teams
Mature eXtreme programming (XP) teams are highly collaborative and selforganising. In previous studies, we have observed that these teams rely on two apparently simple mechanisms of co-ordination and collaboration: story cards and the Wall. Story cards capture and embody the user stories which form the basis of implementation, while the Wall is a physical space used to organise and display the ...
متن کاملUnderstanding Tools and Practices for Distributed Pair Programming
When considering the principles for eXtreme Programming, distributed eXtreme Programming, especially distributed pair programming, is a paradox predetermined to failure. However, global software development as well as the outsourcing of software development are integral parts of software projects. Hence, the support for distributed pair programming is still a challenging field for tool develope...
